Sturgeon Bay, WI High School Fire, Mar 1908

Before the Fire School on Fire Ruins of the Sturgeon Bay School

STURGEON BAY SCHOOL BURNS.

Milwaukee, Wis., March 5. -- A Journal special from Green Bay, Wisconsin says:
A telephone dispatch from Sturgeon Bay says that principal school building in that city burned early today. Loss $60,000, insurance about $32,000. The building provided quarters for the High school and the first, second and third ward grammar schools.
When the blaze was discovered about 4:30 the whole bottom floor was in flames. Not a single thing was saved, all the valuable records being among the losses.
Nearly every family in town suffers a loss, as all of the thousands of dollars' worth of school books in the twelve grades were destroyed.
There were only $32,500 of insurance on the building and contents. Immediate steps will be taken to resume school sessions in vacant buildings and to make arrangements for rebuilding.
Sturgeon Bay is left practically without a school now, as this building contained the High school and provided quarters for the first, second and third ward grammar schools.
