Lena, WI Two Car Collision Kills Five, Oct 1954
FIVE DEAD IN TWO-CAR WRECK NEAR OCONTO.
(By Associated Press)
A two-car smashup in Oconto County brought death Sunday to four teenage girls and a father of seven daughters. The five victims raised Wisconsin's weekend accidental death toll to 12.
Killed in the collision on Oconto County Trunk 1, about 1 1/2 miles east of Lena, were:
LOUIS H. BERTSCH, 54, Route 1, Coleman;
ALICE ANDERSON, 18;
DARLENE CROZIER, 18;
and her sister, GLORIA, 15, all of Route 1, Oconto;
and JANET TREPANIER, 16, of Oconto.
The only survivor was KAY BERTSCH, 11, who was returning home with her father after visiting her mother in an Oconto hospital. The girl suffered a concussion and fractures but was not listed in critical condition.
The teenage girls, out for a Sunday afternoon ride in the auto of Miss Anderson's parents, all were thrown from the car as Bertsch's vehicle struck it in the center of the right side on a blacktop road made slippery by a drizzle. There were no witnesses to the crash.
All the victims were killed instantly except MISS ANDERSON, who died at the Oconto Hospital.
