Portage, WI Three Car Collision Kills Seven, Aug 1958


Portage, Wis. (AP) - A splintering three-car crash at a rural intersection Friday killed seven persons, five of them members of the same family. Two other persons were injured critically and two more less seriously.

The victims were:
KURT H. BREDEL, 74, of Topeka, Kan., and his wife, NUMA, 70.
CHARLES H. MEIER, 74, of rural Chippewa Falls, Wis., and his wife, 70.
Their daughter-in-law, MRS. DONALD MEIER, 38, of Hopkins, Minn., and two of her four children, DONALD, JR., 4, and BARBARA, 7.

In critical condition were MRS. MEIER'S 42-year-old husband and their other son, DAVID, 8.

Another daughter of the DONALD MEIER'S, JUDY, 6, was reported in fair condition as was CHARLES KOEPKA, 32, of Eldorado, Wis., alone in one of the cars.

Authorities said one of the autos - they were uncertain which one - went through a stop sign at the intersection.
