RATTLING HAIL.

SEVERE DESTRUCTION IN DANE COUNTY.

THE SEVEREST HAIL STORM EVER KNOWN IN THE REGION OF MADISON -- THOUSANDS OF GLASS WINDOWS BROKEN -- BIRDS KILLED -- VEGETATION STRIPPED -- OTHER DAMAGE.

Madison, Wis., Sept. 23. -- From 7,000 to 10,000 panes of glass, generally in greenhouses, were broken at 2:15 this morning by hail stones, which lasted three minutes. Stones fell measuring four and six inches in circumference and on the tin roofs, some of which were perforated, sounded like a canonade. Hundreds of birds were killed. The ground was given a carpet of leaves and twigs and the little outstanding tobacco was riddled. Many people resorted to cellars, fearing a cyclone. Some trembled lest an earthquake was upon them. The storm was the severest of the kind ever known here.
