Fort Gay, WV Auto And Train Collide, Feb 1957
4 CHILDREN DIE IN TRAIN-CAR CRASH.
Fort Gay, W. Va. (INS) - Four children and the mother of one of the youngsters were killed Friday when a passenger train crashed into their car at a Fort Gay crossing.
The fatal accident was one of two involving the same train.
The crash took place a few hundred yards from the Fort Gay High School as the mother was driving the children back after their lunch hour. The train dragged the car more than 200 feet.
The dead were identified as:
MRS. BEATRICE HIGGINS, 37, and her daughter, GLADYS, 18;
LOIS RATCLIFF, 16, and her sister, DOROTHY, 12;
and KENNETH CARROLL, 15.
Norfolk and Western Railroad President R. H. Smith and other company officials were aboard the southbound "Powhatan Arrow" when the Fort Gay crash occurred and Smith ordered an immediate investigation.
The train was not damaged and none of its passengers injured and proceeded south soon after the crash.
Less than an hour later the same train smashed into a truck at Chatteroy, W. Va., injuring a passenger in the truck. The injured man, identified as ANDERSON HAGER, 65, of McCarr, Ky., was reported in fair condition at a Williamson, W. Va., hospital.
