Evergreen, VA Head On Auto Collision, June 1961


Evergreen, Va. (UPI) - Eight persons, including a family of five, were killed and three others injured Sunday in a head-on automobile collision near here.
The accident was the worst in the state since Sept. 2, 1959, when 10 persons were killed near Petersburg.
State police said a car carrying three teen-aged couples was traveling in the left lane passing another vehicle, when it collided with a car carrying a family of five.
Killed were LAWRENCE HENSLEY, 51, his wife, LEONA, 43; his daughter, SHEILA, 6, and step-daughters, PATRICIA, 16, and DORTHA, 13, all of Pamplin, Va., in one car, and MARY CORNELIA SOUTHALL, 19, her sister, JANE MARIE, 17, of Farmville, Va., and WALTER E. WILLIAMS, 19, of Pamplin.
Three of the teen-agers, GERALD PRICE, 19; ROGER DALE DAVIS, 17; both of Pamplin, and PENNY ANN SOUTHALL, 18, were hospitalized in satisfactory condition.
Police said PRICE was believed the driver of one of the cars, and MRS. HENSLEY was driving the other.
