Ludlow, VT Scythe Accident, 1846
Elnathan, son of Benjamin Warren, was accidentally killed by his brother, Horace, who struck the point of a scythe into his brain while mowing fodder corn. The accident occurred in 1846. The father of the boys lived on East Hill, on the farm known as the Major Spaulding farm. On the day when the accident occurred, they had been given a stint to cut so much corn, and they they could go to a barn-raising that one of their neighbors, Surrey Burpee, was to have. Thinking that corn-cutters were too slow implements for the work, the older boy took the scythe which did the deadly work.
