Pleasant Valley, UT Coal Mine Accident, Oct 1881

TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.

WILLIAM CHAPPELL, a resident of Spanish Fork, while working in a coal mine at Pleasant Valley met with a terrible accident on Saturday, October 22. He was engaged at the time cutting a door in a chamber of the mines and other workmen were preparing a blast below him of which he knew nothing until the shot was fired. He was thrown violently against the car, by which his body from the hips to the head was terribly lacerated, and it is feared severe internal injuries were received. The poor man was at once forwarded by special train to his home; but at last reports his life was despaired of.
