Riverton, UT Two Car Collision Kills Five, Apr 1957

WORST UTAH CRASH IN 1957 KILLS FIVE.

WIPES OUT ALL BUT ONE MEMBER OF TWO S. L. COUNTY FAMILIES.

By The Associated Press.
Utah's worst highway accident of 1957 snuffed the lives of five persons yesterday, taking all but one member of two young families in an Easter tragedy.
Killed were all three members of the CLINTON DANSIE family and two members of the VERNON COLLINSWORTH family.
Only survivor was COLLINSWORTH, 19, whose 17-year-old wife and 2-month-old son were killed.
The DANSIES lived in Sandy and the COLLINSWORTHS in Granger, both Salt Lake County communities.
The accident occurred in Riverton, another Salt Lake City suburb. Deputy Sheriff Bob Sanders said the Collinsworth car was northbound and the Dansie vehicle westbound. He said stop signs were intended to halt north-south travel at the intersection and one of the signs was sheared off in the collision.

Struck Amidships.
The Dansie vehicle was struck amidships, Sanders said, and the impact caved in the entire left side of the car, which came to rest upside down in a field. All three members of the family were thrown from the vehicle.
The Collinsworth car rolled onto its right side, skidding 94 feet from the point of impact.
No charges were filed immediately but Sanders said investigation would continue.
The five deaths yesterday and one Saturday boosted Utah's highway toll for the year to 54, the same number killed in the corresponding period of 1956.
The five-death smashup was the worst in more than a year. Five were killed on March 10, 1956, when a rear-end collision sent two cars spinning into a gasoline service station. The impact broke a gasoline pump and the fuel spurted into the vehicles, which burst into flames.
Killed in the collision were CLINTON JOHN DANSIE, 25; his wife, BETTY MARTINSON DANSIE, 22; their daughter, VICKIE LYNN, 5 months; MRS. VALOIS EARNSHAW COLLINSWORTH, 17; and her son, STEVE V.; 2 months.
Collinsworth was treated at Salt Lake General Hospital for head and leg cuts and was released.
