La Porte, TX Head On Collision In Tunnel, Apr 1985



La Porte - Two men, one from Baytown and the other of La Porte, were killed in an early Tuesday accident near the south entrance of the Baytown-LaPorte Tunnel.
JAMES MARK FEHRING, 27, of 714 Grantham in Baytown and JERRY BLAYNE GRIFFIN, 32, of 777 S. Avenue R in La Porte were pronounced dead at the scene of the head-on crash, which occurred approximately one-fourth mile south of the tunnel.
Lt. Bobby Lee Powell of the La Porte Police Department said the accident occurred at 6:46 a.m. He said a 1981 blue Camaro driven by FEHRING, was southbound on a straight section of Highway 146 south of the tunnel.
Powell said the accident occurred in the northbound lane of the highway when the Camaro crossed the median striking GRIFFIN'S 1981 Ford pick-up truck.
Both men were declared dead at the scene of the accident by doctors from Hermann Hospital's Life Flight corps, which was called to the accident.
There were no other injuries reported. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.
An official at the Baytown-La Porte tunnel reported that the tunnel was closed to traffic from 6:55 until 8:02 a.m. He said traffic on the Baytown side of the tunnel was backed up at least past the Lee Drive intersection with Highway 146.
Baytown Police Sgt. John Hudson said Baytown police did not respond to the accident and had no official report on the effect of the accident on traffic on the north side of the tunnel.
La Porte police said traffic on the La Porte side of the tunnel was backed up for approximately two miles.
