Marlin, TX Bridge Collapse, May 1922
EIGHT LOST IN CRASH
Waco, Texas, May 17.--Eight persons are reported missing as the result of the collapsing late Tuesday of the Marlin-Belton Bridge, five miles west of Marlin over the Brazos river. It collapsed under pressure of high water.
Those missing are:
J. Lee Jones
F. N. Stallworth, mayor of Marlin
Dr. W. H. Allen
M. M. Jeter
Mrs. Ed Mosley and another woman.
All are from Marlin. Rev. H. W. Knickerbocker was rescued. They were on the west end of the bridge trying to save the structure when it collapsed.
The high water three weeks ago had cut into the approach on the west side, it is said, but the bridge had remained intact and a crowd of people gathered there to watch the raging waters. While thus engaged the west end of the structure gave way.
Rev. Knickerbocker was rescued a mile and a half below the bridge in an exhausted condition.
The eight persons named as known to be missing were seen to sink in midstream. They had been clinging to fragments of the wrecked bridge for some distance.
