Madisonville, TN Two Car Head-On Crash, Aug 1958

FIVE PERSONS KILLED, SEVEN HURT IN MADISONVILLE WRECK.

Madisonville, Tenn. - (AP) - A collision on a straight stretch of U.S. Highway 411 near here killed five persons and injured seven others.
The dead:
MR. and MRS. JOE E. BOWLES, JR., 26 and 25;
their daughter, BECKY JO, 2;
MRS. NORA WALKER STUCKER, 56;
and MRS. CHANDLER CONNORS, 52, all of Shelbyville, Ky.
State Trooper Wallace Mills said the five occupied the BOWLES' Miami-bound car.
A Sweetwater hospital identified the critically injured as MRS. R. P. BAILEY, Dalton, Ga., and her grandson, PAUL SPARKS, 4. Her husband was listed as serious, and another grandson BILLY SPARKS, 6, was in good condition. All were in MRS. ROUNTREE'S car.
The occupants of a third vehicle were taken to an Athens, Tenn., hospital. The hospital listed the condition of MRS. B. E. ROUNTREE, of Athens, as serious, and her two children, BECKY, 15, and TOMMY, 10, as fair.
The trooper said the mishap occurred when the BAILEY car attempted to pass MRS. ROUNTREE and collided head-on with the Kentuckians. MRS. ROUNTREE lost control of her car and it left the highway, overturning several times.
The accident occurred where there is a slight dip in the busy highway, the trooper said.
