Retro, TN Train Accident, Sep 1909

THREE KILLED IN WRECK NEAR CHATTANOOGA, TENN.

Chattanooga, Tenn., Sept. 4 (AP) -- Three men were killed, one seriously injured and three slightly hurt in a wreck on a spur track of the Cincinnati Southern Railway at Retro, 25 miles north of Chattanooga this morning.
The dead:
L. L. WATERS, of Dayton, track supervisor.
HERBERT VANDERGRIFF, of Retro.
MONROE HICKMAN, of Retro, colored section hand.
ALBERT VANDERGRIFF was crushed under a car, losing a leg.
CALVIN DOSS, FRED SMITH and ALFRED BILLINGSLEY, the latter colored, were slightly injured.
A section crew was assisting in coupling a long string of idle cars when some of them got away on a grade and ran down the men. A relief train was sent from Chattanooga with physicians and wrecking crews.
