Allentown, PA Car Crash Into Canal, Jan 1998


Allentown, PA - Five young men were killed when their car apparently missed a turn and plunged into the frigid water of the Lehigh Canal in Allentown Saturday morning.
The five friends from the Allentown-Bethlehem area were speeding along a road next to the canal when the car went out of control about 5 a.m., Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said. The car knocked over a wood post and wire fence, traveling about 20 feet off the road before in plunged into the canal.
The victims included CHRISTOPHER RICHARDSON, 19; BRIAN ISLAND, 17; KAMAL E. GONZALEZ, 20; and MICHAEL VALIENTE, 19. The fifth victim remained unidentified yesterday.
The accident came two days after five people drowned in Luzerne County when a Jeep slid into a water-filled pit in an abandoned strip mine.
