Five Mine Carpenters Dropped Fifteen Hundred Feet

Wilkesbarre, Feb. 13 - A rope attached to a timber truck at No. 8 Slope of the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Coal Company, at Ashley, broke this morning as it was being lowered into the slope. The truck ran to the bottom, a distance of 1,500 feet, with fearful velocity. Upon it were five mine carpenters, who were thrown off when half-way down. One of them, JOHN WILLIAMS, was instantly killed and the other four seriously injured, and the recovery of two of them is doubtful.
