Guthrie, OK Prairie Fire, Sept 1893

Many Cherokee Strip Settlers Lost All Their Property.

GUTHRIE, O. T., Sept. 28.---A disastrous prairie fire occurred in the western part of the Cherokee Strip, and scores of settlers lost all their property and many narrowly escaped with their lives.

John Baker and a Mr. Thomas and his family were burned to death. Two children of Mrs. George Harrison are missing and it is thought they have perished. Mrs. Thompson and two children were fatally burned and Mrs. J. S. Kennedy and two children were badly injured by the flames and smoke.

Most of the men were absent at the land offices filing their claims at the time the fire occurred and the women and children were compelled to struggle against the fire alone.
