Father Dies Of Injuries In Collision

A car-train wreck April 18 claimed its second victim with the death Saturday afternoon of Albert James Scott, 31, of Nashport, RFD 2.

He died at 5:50 p.m. in Good Samaritan Hospital where doctors had performed brain surgery twice in an attempt to save his life.

Scott's son, Kenneth James, 9, was killed instantly when their auto was struck broadside by a Baltimore and Ohio freight near their home and pushed more than half a mile along the tracks.

The fatal mishap occurred on Township Rd. 408 in Muskingum County a mile and one-half east of Toboso at a new crossing created by the relocation of the tracks for the Dillion Dam.

Scott had apparently attempted to stop after seeing the train too late and skidded on loose gravel into the path of the diesel-powered freight.

Scott was first taken to Newark Hospital and later transferred to Zanesville for the brain surgery.

The victim was an employe[sic] of the Scioto Provision Co. and had worked the morning of the crash. He was on his way home at about 12:30 p.m. and had picked up his son en route.

Scott's two daughters, Sue, 6, and Candy, 5, saw the car being pushed down the track by the train and called to their mother.

Scott is survived by the two daughters; his wife, Ruth; his mother, Mrs. Harry Elmore of Sonora, and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Collings of Zanesville.

The body is in a Zanesville funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Free Methodist Church with the Rev. T. B. Orr officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Zanesville.
