Adirondack Mountains, NY Forest Fires, Aug 1899
FIRE IN THE ADIRONDACKS.
FLAMES STILL UNCHECKED -- TIMBER AND FARM PROPERTY DESTROYED.
Saranac Lake, N. Y., August 20. -- Without exception, the most serious forest fires that this section has experienced in over a decade are now injuring valuable Adirondack timberland and threatening village and farm property. Saranac Lake village is today the center of interest and alarm, owing to the fact that to both the west and south the fiercest fires are encountered.
The report that some of the large hotels are in danger is without foundation, although the outlook at one time was serious. Over at PAUL SMITH'S the situation continues to be serious, but the hotel itself is in no danger.
