Titanic Sinking - Reads of Son's Death

Mother Believed Boy on the Titanic Was Safe in Philippines.

Special to The New York Times.

LOS ANGELES, Cal., April 24.---Seeing the name of N. Marriott among those lost on the Titanic whose bodies were reported rescued by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett, was the first intimation Mrs. May Austin had that her son, Ned Marriott was on the doomed ship.

Until she read over the list of the identified dead on the Mackay-Bennett, Mrs. Austin believed her son was safe in the Philippines, although in the last letter she received from him he said he xpected[sic] to return home soon by way of Europe. She feels certain that the N. Marriott reported by wireless to Cape Race is her son, because of the uncommonness of the name and the strong probability that he had left Manila for home. Mrs. Austin said her son was 30 years old, and was a printer.
