Buffalo, NY Multi Car Collision, Mar 1998

Buffalo - (AP) - Six people were killed during rush hour yesterday in a fiery multi-car pileup on a downtown expressway.
As many as nine vehicles, including a van carrying senior citizens and a tractor trailer carrying new cars, were involved in the chain-reaction crash about 4:15 p.m.
The accident happened along southbound Interstate 190 that runs through Buffalo and connects to the Thruway. Four vehicles, including the van, burst into flames seconds after impact.
The dead included five occupants of the van, state police said.
Names of the dead were not known an hour after the accident, which backed up traffic for miles. Television stations reported being flooded with calls from people concerned their loved ones had not come home.
"The first two cars got involved in an accident, and the next two couldn't stop," an unidentified witness told WKBW-TV.
"They made impact to the right, and the last van spun sideways and hit."
When another car hit the pileup, the middle car erupted in fire, the witness said.
