Buffalo, NY House Fire, Apr 1891
A LITTLE GIRL BURNED TO DEATH AT BUFFALO.
BUFFALO, April 4.--- At 11:25 yesterday fire broke out in the two-story frame house 605 Elm street, owned by Jacob Mayer, and occupied on the first floor by William Dickson, and on the second floor by Charles Maltby in whose rooms the fire started. Maltby and his wife had gone down town and left the house and two children in charge of a boarder who fell asleep and was awakened by the screams of the children, when he discovered that the house was on fire.
He seized the oldest child, aged 5 years, and carried it down stairs in safety, then rushed back to rescue the baby, 2 years old, but was driven back by the fire, and was severely burned about the face. The result was that the child was burned to death. After putting out the fire the child's body was found by Fireman Moest, literally roasted and burned to a crisp.
