Newark, NJ Building Fire, Apr 1904
TWO FIREMEN KILLED.
Newark, N. J., April 23.----Two firemen were killed and 16 injured at a fire early today in a six-story brick building on Mechanic street, occupied by Wiener & Co., saddlery[sic] and hardware manufacturers. While they were on the roof of an adjoining building an explosion occurred in the Wiener building which blew out the wall, and three stories of the side wall crashed down on the firemen.
Wiener & Co.'s loss is 40,000.
Hardly had the army of workers returned to ther[sic] places of duty when the clatter of a fire engine responding to an alarm in the neighborhood again agitated them and they rushed to the windows and fire escapes. The management decided that the employes[sic] were in no condition to remain at work and the factory shut down for the day.
