Bear Creek, MT Smith Mine Disaster - 16 Bodies Recovered

16 More Bodies Found In Montana Coal Mine

Bearcreek, Mont., March 3 (AP).-Oxygen masked rescuers found sixteen more bodies in the gas-choked depths of the Smith coal mine Wednesday, bringing to thirty-six the number recovered since an explosion trapped seventy-four men below the 500-foot level Saturday.

The lethal carbon monoxide fumes that hung darkly in the labyrinth of sloping workings a mile and a half into a hill from the mine mouth continued to hamper the work of crews, who have almost despaired of finding any of the remaining thirty-eight men alive.

The crews which sweep the gas from the mine depths, chamber by chamber, reported they could detect no sign of life.
