Helena, MT Fires, Sept 1874

Incendiarism in Helena.

HELENA, Montana, Sept. 21.—There were four incendiary fires here last night. The first alarm, at 1:30 o’clock, was caused by a fire in a building on Main street, occupied by Bailey, jeweler, and McMurphy, fruit dealer. Shortly after Mr. Hall’s house, near the corner of Broadway and Rodney streets was discovered on fire, and subsequently fire broke out in the court house. Very little damage was done in the above instances, as everything was soaked by the recent rain, and the losses were principally caused by moving goods; but a fire at Hot Springs destroyed a building occupied as a saloon and dance hall. One man was arrested on suspicion of setting the fires.
