Kansas City, MO Head On Crash On Bridge, May 1953


Kansas City, Mo., (UP) - Seven persons were killed and an eighth was critically injured in a head-on collision of two automobiles early today on the A.S.B. Bridge spanning the Missouri River here.
Investigating officers said wreckage of the automobiles that collided on the bridge was
"so twisted it's hard to tell what happened."
They said it appeared "liquor and excessive speed" were involved.
Killed in the crash were WILLIE MUNSEN; DONNA JEAN MUNSEN; MABLE GRIDER; PATRICIA ANN MULLEN; JOHN EDWARD MEFFORD; and BEDFORD GRIDER all of Kansas City, Mo.; and LEO BANNISTER, Odessa, Mo. WANDA HONTZ of Kansas City was in critical condition at General Hospital.
Officers said it appeared the cars were driven by MUNSEN and BANNISTER,
"but there's no way to tell definitely."
The accident was the worst single mishap in the city's traffic history, police said. It brought the toll for the year to date to 31, exactly equaling the total for all of 1952.
