PREMATURE BLAST TAKES TWO LIVES.
ACCIDENTAL EXPLOSION KILLS MAN 40, AND YOUTH 17; 2 SERIOUSLY INJURED.
Laurel, MIss., Dec. 16. -- (AP) -- Two men were dead today and two others badly hurt as the result of an accidental explosion of dynamite during tree stumping operations late yesterday on the N. W. SMITH farm near here.
The deaths and injuries were caused by the premature explosion of a charge of dynamite laid against a stump which set off several sticks of dynamite in a bucket nearby.
The dead were TOM BYRD, 40, killed instantly, his body shattered, and HILMER WALTERS, 17, who died shortly after being admitted to a hospital.
Most seriously injured were CURTIS WALTERS, 22, and N. W. SMITH, 30. Their condition was pronounced undetermined at the hospital today.
CROSBY WALTERS, father of the dead man, suffered burns about the head but was released from the hospital after treatment.
