Birch Run - A car carrying five young cousins and their grandparents home from a vacation crashed and burst into flames on a rural road early Sunday, killing all seven.
Tuscola County sheriff's deputies said the victims were trapped inside the burning wreckage.
Killed were PHILIP SMITH, 51, of Clio; his wife, FRANCES, 48; and their grandchildren; SHELLY TANNER, 7, of Clio; AMY TANNER, 6, and her sister, JENNIFER, 2, both of Flint; and MELISSA SMITH, 8, and her sister, CHRISTEN, 6, also of Flint.
A Sheriff's Department spokesman said the car hit a bridge abutment and overturned on a rural road about five miles east of Birch Run at about 2 a.m.
Authorities said the grandparents were returning to their home after taking the children to Sault Ste. Marie for a vacation.
