Gaylord, MI Two Bus Collision, Jan 1950


Gaylord, Mich. - (AP) - State police today expected an official report on the two-bus collision near here Saturday, in which five persons died.
The troopers and Otsego County officials have been investigating the crash. One bus carried the Michigan Tech hockey squad, and the other was a Greyhound unit from Sault Ste. Marie.
The two sideswiped on a curve in a blinding snowstorm. Besides the five dead, 20 persons were injured, one critically.
Those killed were RICHARD L. LOUTIT, 20, of Battle Creek, student manager of the hockey team; ROBERT GITZEN, 18, of Houghton, a member of the squad; GEORGE ANDERSON, 61, of Fox, a Greyhound passenger; WAINO R. PETERSON, 42, of Mohawk, another passenger; and CYNTHIA LOU KAMPE, 21-month-old daughter of MR. and MRS. PAUL KAMPE of Royal Oak.
The KAMPE baby was carried by her mother who was badly injured. MISS HAZEL KETURI, 19, of Beacon Hill, another of the injured, remains in a critical condition at Mercy Hospital in Grayling.
