SEVEN KILLED IN 3-CAR CRASH.
ALL HAD ATTENDED BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR ONE VICTIM.
COME TO UNTIMELY DEATHS WHILE RIDING IN JEEP : 5 OTHERS SUFFER INJURY.
Monson, Dec. 9 (AP) - A three-car crash on a rain-swept highway early today killed seven persons homeward-bound from a birthday party for one of the victims. Four men and three women were killed, all passengers in a jeep. Five other persons were hurt, at least two critically.
Police said the jeep came from a lakeside cottage in nearby Wales, where the passengers were guests at a 21st birthday party for MRS. SHIRLEY CHOUINARD, of Palmer, who was killed with her husband, RICHARD, 24, in the crash.
Police listed the other dead as:
MICHAEL PALERMO, 21, of Palmer, a dairy worker.
MRS. SYBIL BECK, 19, of Wales.
GEORGE BEAN, 20, of Monson, an attendant at the state hospital there.
FRED BOOTH, 33, of Camden, Me.
MRS. DORIS BOOTH, 33, wife of Fred.
Traffic was tied up for three miles in both directions as police cut the wreckage apart to free bodies of some of the dead.
Police said the jeep - apparently traveling at high speed - crashed head-on into a truck after passing a sedan. The jeep evidently bounced back into the sedan after hitting the truck, police said. Both the truck and sedan bounded off the road. The truck overturned on the passenger car.
Police said the jeep's speedometer jammed at 68 miles an hour - indicating its speed when the crash occurred. The cars crashed at the intersection of Route 20, a heavily traveled main highway, and Fenton Road.
The injured were identified as MRS. ELIZABETH BROWN of Wales and her daughter, PATRICIA, 15; CHARLES WRIGHTINGTON, of Middleboro; HARRY GRISWOLD, of Norfolk, Va., and FRANCIS JOUBERT, of Ludlow.
All, with the exception of JOUBERT, were taken to Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer. JOUBERT was removed to Mary Lane Hospital.
