Portland, ME Long Island Fire, Jun 1914
HALF A MILE OF FIRE.
Hotel, Cottages, Stores, and Wharf Burn in Portland, Me., Harbor.
PORTLAND, Me., June 29.--Fire today destroyed buildings extending for half a mile along the shore of Long Island, in Portland Harbor, causing a loss of $60,000. The burned structures included the Granite Spring Hotel, seven cottages, two stores, and a wharf.
Until the arrival of a fireboat from this city a bucket brigade tried vainly to hold the flames in check. The fire started near a fireplace in the hotel.
