Couple and GI Die in Crash At West Point

A Louisville couple and a Ft. Knox soldier were killed and three other persons injured in a four-car collision late Sunday afternoon on U.S. 31W at West Point.

Killed were William Jhoslien, 66, and his wife, Effie Lee, 57, both of 4013 Taylor Blvd., and Pfc. Merle W. Ortega, 21, of Kansas City, MO.

State police at Elizabethtown said the crash occurred about 5:30 p.m. when a southbound car in which Ortega was a passenger crossed the median of the four-land highway and collided with a north-bound car occupied by the Jhosleins.

The injured included Spec. 4 Leopoldo Garcis, 21, who officers said was driving the car in which Ortega was riding. Both soldiers were assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade at Ft. Knox.
