Ottumwa, IA Two Car Collision, Jan 1968

CRASH KILLS 7 MEMBERS OF FAMILY.

By The Associated Press.
Eight persons, seven from one family, were killed late Sunday night when two cars collided on a snow-packed road near Ottumwa in southwest Iowa.
Dead are:
RICHARD E. BABER, SR., 37, of rural Ottumwa; his wife JANET, 30; their five children - DEBBIE, 12; RICHARD, JR., 9; MICHAEL, 8; LAURI, 1; and NICKI five months - and TERRY LEE CHIDESTER, 23, of Blakesburg.
BABER'S car apparently hit a heavy snow drift, turned sideways and was struck broadside by the CHIDESTER auto, authorities said.
Both cars were demolished, but there was no evidence that either auto was speeding, said Lt. Floyd Carver of the State Highway Patrol.
All victims were dead on arrival at hospitals except BABER who died a short time after the crash.
