Oskaloosa, IA Car Plunges Into River, Jun 1951

Oskaloosa, Ia. - (AP) - A vacation trip to Kansas ended in tragedy a couple of hours after it started for seven members of a Waterloo, Ia., family when their car plunged into the backwaters of the Des Moines River ten miles west of Oskaloosa.
Six of the family drowned yesterday when their car swerved out of control after passing a semi-trailer truck, hit a bridge abutment and dropped into about seven feet of water. Heroic action by two passing motorists saved the life of one.
MRS. DOROTHY POSTEL, 28, whose three boys were drowned, was in an Oklahoma
hospital today suffering from shock and exposure. She was rescued by Gabriel Bruccini, 31, of Knoxville, Ia., and an unidentified man, both of whom waded into the water.
Another passerby, Clayton Moorman of Fenton, Mich., spent nearly two hours in the cold water pulling out the bodies of LYLE EARL POSTEL, 29; MRS. NAMIE PAYNE, 48, his mother; MARY JEAN POSTEL, 16, daughter of MRS. PAYNE; RICHARD, 7, and JAMES, 5, children of EARL and DOROTHY POSTEL. Another son, STANLEY, 1 1/2,
was found later in the water.
