17 PASSENGERS AND DRIVER ARE HURT IN BUS-TRUCK COLLISION.
IOWAN AMONG 8 STILL IN HOSPITAL AFTER CRASH NEAR ATLANTIC.
Atlantic, (AP) - Seventeen passengers and the driver of a Greyhound bus were treated for injuries following a bus-truck collision about 3 miles west of here late Thursday night.
Eight of the passengers, including 1 Iowan, were still hospitalized Friday, but none were injured seriously.
Deputy Sheriff Dale Cornell said that MERRILL CLAUDE PERDUE, 24, of Atlantic, whom he identified as the driver of the truck, was arrested Friday morning. No charges had been filed.
The bus skidded sideways about 60 feet after the collision, the rear wheels dropped into a culvert, and the bus overturned, smashing the top.
The injured were taken to an Atlantic hospital in another empty bus which had been preceding the vehicle that was carrying the passengers.
CORNELL said that the empty bus had been forced into a ditch by the same truck. He said the driver of this bus, Perry Hilfiker, Omaha, turned back when he noticed the other bus was not following him.
The driver of the bus carrying passengers was identified as GLEN CEDARBURG, Omaha, who suffered leg and head abrasions.
The injured still hospitalized were identified as:
MRS. CLAUDE STURTEVANT, 66, Ann Arbor, Mich., lacerations of the left arm and shock.
MRS. LYDIA JOHNSON, 60, Los Angeles, shock.
MRS. CLARA TRASSER, 55, San Diego, shoulder injury.
ARTHUR WERTMAN, 11, San Diego, head lacerations.
MISS PEARL FOSMER, 65, Chicago, lacerations on the neck.
MRS. EVELYN, REILLY, 40, wife of Maj. G. G. Reilly, Lowry Field, Denver, shock and bruises.
MISS ELSIE JENSEN, 23, Park Ridge, Ill., arm injuries.
MRS. GLADYS PLACE, 62, Dexter, Iowa, bruises.
