Clarksville, IN Three Car Accident, July 1971

10 KILLED, 3 INJURED IN ACCIDENT NEAR CLARKSVILLE.

Clarksville, Ind. (UPI) - Ten persons were killed and three others injured near this Ohio River community Sunday evening in one of the worst traffic accidents around the nation over the July 4th holiday period.
State police said a three-car accident occurred on Interstate 65 just south of here when a southbound car crossed the median strip dividing the four-lane superhighway and struck a second vehicle head-on. A third car plowed into the wreckage of the two cars.
The victims were all occupants of the first two cars involved in the accident.
The dead included the REV. PRENTIS E. WILLEN, 43, Shirley, Ind. - the driver of the first northbound car - his wife, DOROTHY LUCILLE, 43, and two children, SHARON KAY WILLEN, 19, Shirley, Ind., and STANLEY A. WILLEN, 17, Shirley, Ind. Also killed was REV. WILLEN'S mother, PAULINE WILLEN, 63, Columbus.
STANLEY WILLEN died of injuries received in the collision several hours later in a Louisville hospital.
REV. WILLEN was the pastor of the Shirley Nazarene Church.
Police said the driver of the southbound car was MARGARET B. POPPLEWELL, 27, Louisville, who was killed. Also killed were VIRTHIEL L. POPPLEWELL, 25, Louisville, the woman's husband; WAYNEFORD L. CARROLL, 32, Louisville; his wife LOLA MAE, 25, Louisville, and their son MICHAEL W. CARROLL, 2.
The driver of the third car, which piled into the wreckage when it was unable to stop, was JOSEPH TEGART, age unknown, New Albany. He was injured slightly.
Also injured was 7-year-old PAMELA JONES, Louisville, a passenger in the POPPLEWELL, car.
