Red Key, IN Gunpowder Explosion, July 1890

HOUSE BLOWN UP BY A GUNPOWDER EXPLOSION.

Red Key, Ind., July 22. -- While a crowd of men were lounging about the grocery store of Horn & Carroll Monday afternoon. HENRY MAYNARD set off a firecracker. A spark flew into a keg of powder, and a terrific explosion ensued. A moment later the roof of the frame building fell in, and next the horror of fire was addend. The crowd of people which had collected soon extinguished the flames and rescued the imprisoned men.
Out of a crowd of about twenty in the store at the time of the explosion, five were seriously injured, the others escaped from the building before it collapsed.
The injured are:
J. T. CARROLL, fatally crushed.
DANIEL WELT, throat cut by a flying fragment of glass, will probably die.
JOHN LAKE.
JAMES BLAKELY.
JOHN TAYLOR.
Several others were slightly hurt, and the store building is a total wreck.
