Winnetka, IL LADY ELGIN Shipwreck, Sept 1860

Many Milwaukee Irish families were affected by the tragic sinking of the steamer "Lady Elgin" in Lake Michigan on September 8, 1860. Returning from a pleasant excursion to Chicago, to hear Stephen A. Douglas speak, the "Lady Elgin" was struck by another steamer during a severe storm, near Winnetka, Illinois. About 430 people lost their lives, but another 100 have not been accounted for.
