Tybee, GA Drowning, Jun 1908

SAVANNAH, Ga., June 7.---Suddenly weakening after two hours spent in an unusually strong surf a mile from the usual bathing beach. Fritz Schwalbe, aged 19, was drowned late this afternoon at Tybee. His sister's fiance and several other young men were with him and fought hard with the waves for his body, but to no avail. It is thought that a strong undertow pulled the young man out to sea and that his body will never be recovered.

Several of the bathers were wrestling and Schwalbe was heard to laugh as he was thrown under the water. He failed to come up and was not seen again, though his friends dived and searched for him.
