The Florida Highway Patrol said the accident on State Road 70, about 15 miles east of Arcadia, also sent two women and two boys to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.
"The vehicles were both tore up terribly bad," said FHP spokesman Lt. Malcolm Rhodes.
Rhodes said troopers were working to identify the dead and injured in the accident, which occurred about 3 p.m.
An Isuzu sports utility vehicle carrying four teenage boys was headed west when it pulled into the eastbound lanes to pass another car. The Isuzu pulled into the path of a Ford van, Rhodes said.
The vehicles were believed to be traveling at least 60 mph.
