Los Gatos, CA Business Fire, Oct 1901
BUSINESS PART OF LOS GATOS BURNED.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN TOWN SUFFERS A LOSS OF A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS' WORTH OF PROPERTY -- FOUR ACRES BURNED OVER.
San Jose, Cal., Oct. 13. -- The most destructive fire in the history of Los Gatos occurred at an early hour this morning. The entire business section of the town was wiped out. The area covered by the fire is estimated at about four acres. Property variously estimated in value at from $100,000 to $150,000 was destroyed. A dozen or more business blocks, several manufactories, a livery stable, a church and many dwelling-houses were burned. The fire department was powerless to cope with the flames, which, fanned by a strong southerly breeze, stopped only when practically all the fuel at hand was exhausted. A number of men were injured but none seriously.
