Los Angeles, CA Train Wreck and Oil Refinery Explosion, Aug 1902


Fearful Accident at Los Angeles, Cal. -- Fuel Tank of Engine Explodes, and Oil Plant Destroyed.

Los Angeles, Cal., Aug. 4. -- A Santa Fe passenger train returning from Redondo Beach last night, ran through an open switch and crashed into an oil train. Both engines were wrecked as was also one coach and four tank cars. The fuel tank of one of the engines exploded immediately after the crash, setting fire to the wreck. Burning oil was scattered in every direction and the large oil refinery plant of the Comb Refining company was set on fire. The plant was destroyed as were all the cars in the wreck except one. T. D. MARTIN, fireman of the freight engine, is missing and it is thought his body is under the burned wreckage. Several others were badly hurt.
