Santa Maria, CA (near) Head On Collision, Aug 1953


Santa Maria, (Santa Barbara County), Aug. 11. - (AP) - A head-on collision killed seven persons - six of them members of one family - and critically injured another last night. The crash occurred about 22 miles south of here on the Pacific Coast Highway, U. S. 101.
One of the dead, the lone occupant of a southbound sedan, was identified by Officer Vernon Agee of the California Highway Patrol as MONTE B. MYERS, 29. He was believed to be an oil company employee residing in this area.
The driver of the other car was MRS. NORMA HAYNIE RAGLE, 20, of El Monte.
The other dead were identified as:
MRS. JESSIE HAYNIE COLBURN, about 41, mother of Mrs. Ragle, same address;
GLORIA HAYNIE, 12, sister of the driver;
PAULINE L. COLBURN, 9; WILLIAM JOSEPH COLBURN, 7; and RICHARD BERNARD COLBURN, 2, the latter three children of MRS. COLBURN by her second marriage.
Taken unconscious to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital here was CAROL HAYNIE, 16, sister of the driver.
Officer Agee said a truck driver told him the northbound car came out of a turn on the wrong side of the road. The autos collided in the center of the highway.
