Delano, CA Head On Crash Kills Six, Feb 1987



Delano, Calif. (AP) - Six teen-agers were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision involving two cars on a country road, authorities said Sunday.
The injured were taken to two area hospitals. Three suffered major injuries, one had moderate injuries, and one minor injuries.
EFRIN RODRIGUEZ, 19, of McFarland, was driving northbound late Saturday night with six passengers on Driver Road between Delano and McFarland when his car strayed into the southbound lane and struck a car driven by RALPH ESCALANTE, 18, of Delano, California Highway Patrol dispatcher John Sanchez said.
RODRIGUEZ and passengers ROSA SOTO, 18; LIONEL MARTINEZ, 17, and SANDRA PEREZ, 17, all of McFarland, were killed outright. Passengers PATTY ANAYA, 12; ANITA ANAYA, 14, and RODOLFO HERRERA, 15, all of McFarland were injured.
ESCALANTE and SONNAN SILVA, 16, of Delano, also were killed instantly, and ROMAN SILVA, 17, of Delano, and ALICIA COVARRUBIAS, 16, of McFarland, were injured.
There was no evidence any of the people were wearing seat belts, said Sanchez. The accident investigation was turned over to a CHP accident team in Fresno that specializes in major crashes.
The accident site in the southern San Joaquin Valley is about 130 miles north of Los Angeles. Delano and McFarland are Kern County towns on Highway 99.
PATTY ANAYA was listed in very serious condition Sunday at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield. The girl suffered multiple injuries that were not specified.
SILVA and MISS COVARRUBIAS both were listed in guarded condition at Delano Regional Medical Center, where HERRERA and ANITA ANAYA were in fair condition after being admitted for observation.
SILVA suffered multiple fractures and cuts, a broken ankle and jaw and a dislocated hip. COVARRUBIAS who was thrown from the car during the crash, suffered a broken left leg and multiple cuts.
