Two Drown At Salton Sea
Two elderly fishermen were drowned in the Slaton Sea Friday after their boat was capsized by a wave. A third person was rescued after clinging to the overturned boat.
Loyd T. Carpenter, 75, of San Bernardino and Leslie Rhoades, 71, of Montclair, were found floating about two miles off shore near Salton City. They tried to swim ashore.
Rhoades’ daughter, Mrs. Venita Robertson, of La Verne, Calif., was rescued by a passing boater.
Mrs. Robertson said the motor of the boat was raised and the two men were trying to untangle the anchor line in the stern of the craft when a wave upset the boat.
All were wearing life saving devices.
After about an hour in the water, the two men decided to try to swim the three miles to shore but apparently became fatigued and drowned.
