SEVEN DROWNED AS AUTO FALLS IN POND.
Haleyville, Ala., Sept. 27 (AP) - Seven persons drowned and an eighth escaped today when an automobile, out of control, rolled backward down a hill into a mill pond, six miles north of here.
The eight passenger, after a vain effort to rescue his companions, trudged to a farm house two miles away to give news of the tragedy.
The dead are:
JOHN SPRADLING, 40, owner of the automobile;
MISS WINNIE LEE, 18, driver;
AUDREY LEE, 14, sister of WINNIE;
MISS MAGGIE MAE BLACKSTOCK, 18;
MISS WILLIE DEAN BLACKSTOCK, 16; and ANNIE LAURA BLACKSTOCK, 13, all sisters;
NOLAN CLEO POSEY, 19.
THURSTON SMITH, 22, escaped. He was riding on the back seat of the automobile in which his companions were returning to their rural homes from the Haleyville fair.
Doors of the sedan were closed and all the bodies were on the rear seat when the machine was brought to the surface, seven hours later.
