Rothschild, WI Auto And Train Crash, Jun 1957
AUTO CRUSHED BY PASSENGER TRAIN.
Rothschild, Wis. (AP) - Four young Wausau residents, out for a ride, perished when their new car and a Milwaukee Road passenger train collided at the crossing of Highway 51 near Rothschild, about six miles south of Wausau.
The victims were:
JAMES KATEZKA, 22, the owner and believed to be the driver of the car;
WILLIAM SCHAETZL, 22;
NANCY DRAZLER, 19;
and MARY CAROL WARREN, 19.
MISS WARREN died at a hospital shortly after the crash. The others were found dead in the wreckage.
Dragged 135 Feet.
Police said the northbound train was traveling at between 40 and 45 miles an hour at the time of the crash. The car was dragged 135 feet and after falling from the engine it rolled another 90 feet.
The girls were natives of Wakefield, Mich., but came to Wausau to work at the same firm that employed KATCZKA. SCHAETZL was recently discharged from the Army.
