9-year-old boy killed in Patrick County house fire

PATRICK CO., Va. -
A 9-year-old Patrick County boy died in a house fire Sunday evening.

First responders were called to the home at 11579 Woolwine Highway around 5:08 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived, the two-story farmhouse was on fire.

The boy was found in an upstairs bedroom.

“Firefighters indicated that the room the boy was found in had sustained a great deal of smoke inundation, and we are suspecting that was the cause of death,” Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said in a statement.

Smith said the family is relatively new to the area, and has been renting the home for 15 months. The boy was not enrolled in the Patrick County school system.

The fire investigation is being handled by Sheriff’s Major Garry Brown, and is being assisted by the Virginia State Police and the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
