E-TEXAS COLLISION KILLS 7.
San Augustine, Texas (AP) - A car and a log truck collided Friday near this East Texas city, killing seven people, including five children, and seriously injuring another, authorities said.
The victims were identified as ALLEN THOMPSON, JR., 35, the driver of the car; and his daughters, VANESSA, 13; and JANELLE and TAWANDA, both 10; CYNTHIA STEWARD, 23; and her children, KENA, 3; and KENNETH RAY, JR., 3 months, all of Houston, said Trooper Bobby Perry of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Another passenger, KENNETH RAY STEWARD, 28, also of Houston, was taken to a Nacogdoches hospital in serious but stable condition, Perry said.
The truck driver, identified as Jerry D. Hale, Jr., 32, of Huntington, was not injured, Perry said.
Perry said the bodies, all mangled and at least three decapitated, were scattered along a 100-year stretch of Texas Highway 103 near the intersection of Farm Road 3279, Perry said.
"This is the worst accident I've seen in my 10 years as a highway patrolman," he said.
Perry said the eastbound car had crossed the center stripe and was returning to the eastbound lane when it and the westbound truck struck broadside about 3:45 p.m.
