Hawkins, TX Fire, Apr 1879

HAWKINS, April 10. -- A fire broke out this morning, about 1 o'clock, in the hardware store of W. S. Giles, causing the complete destruction of that building and contents.  The dry goods house of Adams & Wellborn, and barber shop of C. L. Bell, and the store occupied by Francis & Co., were entirely consumed.  The dry goods and groceries were saved.  The origin of the fire is as yet unknown, but is supposed to have caught from a defect in the stove-pipe in Giles's store.  W. S. Giles, loss about $4500; Adams & Wellborn, loss about $5000.  No insurance. The recent heavy rains undoubtedly saved the place from complete destruction, as a heavy wind was blowing at the time. Had the fire occurred during the dry season, the town could not have been saved.
