Amarillo, TX Apartment House Fire, June 1938

THREE KILLED IN AMARILLO BLAZE.

TWO-STORY APARTMENT BURNS, 10-YEAR-OLD BOY HERO OF DISASTER.

Amarillo, Texas, June 14 -- (AP) -- Three persons were killed today when fire destroyed a 24-room two-story apartment house in which 30 persons were sleeping.
The dead:
MRS. C. W. JAMES, 16.
W. L. THOMPSON, JR., 16.
DONALD RAY THOMPSON, 4.
MRS. W. L. THOMPSON, mother of the two boys, jumped from a second story window with her seven months old baby. Both her legs were broken and the baby suffered critical injuries.
The father suffered bruises and severe burns.
The victims apparently died of suffocation.
No others were injured seriously.
GENE MALONE, 10-year-old boy, was the hero of the fire. He was awakened by the noise. Seeing the building was afire, he started yelling and alarmed the sleeping persons in time for them to escape.
Origin of the fire has not been determined.
More than 2,000 firemen were in the city for a state convention.
The THOMPSONS are former residents of Shawnee, Okla.
